Ladies, This Is The Missing Piece Of Your Skincare Routine
/One of the most common questions I get from my clients and colleagues is about my skincare routine—specifically, they want to know my skincare secrets. Skincare is something I’ve been passionate about for decades. Every day I put aside time to treat and care for my skin, and through years of trial and error, I’ve learned what steps are absolutely necessary and which could be considered “nice-to-haves.” And sunscreen, ladies, is an absolute necessity.
My number one must-have product that I believe every woman needs—especially women over 50—is a high-quality, broad spectrum sunscreen. Why? Well, a few reasons.
First off, sunscreen can protect our skin from harsh UVA rays, UVB rays, and environmental pollutants. Not only is this essential for our overall health, but these rays and toxins can contribute to skin damage, often making our skin appear older. Now, you know my position on aging: I feel it should be celebrated, and that the conversation around aging has to change. I believe we should embrace our bodies at any age, skin included. But at the same time, we have to take care of ourselves, and we deserve to look and feel our best. Confidence primarily comes from the inside out, but it can simultaneously come from the outside in. You look your best when you feel your best AND feel your best when you look your best.
In terms of choosing a sunscreen, you want to make sure to choose one with “broad spectrum” protection. This will minimize your skin’s exposure to UVA and UVB rays, which can contribute to skin cancer and premature aging. Also, you want a sunscreen that has an SPF of 30 or higher—if you're entirely new to sunscreen, I suggest starting with the highest SPF that you can find (I recommend this one). Lastly, remember that no sunscreens are entirely waterproof, they’re only water resistant, so it’s essential to reapply sunscreen at least every two hours. Better safe than sunburnt.
To help with your search, I’ve put together an extensive list of sunscreens that I recommend for daily use. Even if you’re staying completely inside, you have to apply sunscreen every morning. Sunscreen should come last in your skincare routine, after your moisturizer, but if you can find a moisturizer with SPF in it, all the better! The most important factor is that you wear it every day, regardless of the temperature, season, and how much time you spend outdoors.
Here are some sunscreens that are worth checking out, grouped by skin concern and/or skin type.
