My Top Book Picks for Summer 2022

Every summer I've been trying more and more to leave my phone on my desk and take a book to the beach or the pool instead. It's a ritual that I've started looking forward to (and it's much more enjoyable than being on my phone!).

This summer season, there's no excuse for being without something good to read. Summer books are so worth the wait. From explosive novels, revealing memoirs, brilliant biographies, and everything in between, no matter what you like to read, there's a book that's sure to be just what you're looking for.

Maybe you're already an avid reader or maybe you're looking to get back into it – either way, I wanted to share five books that I’ve enjoyed recently (and a bunch more that are on my list for this summer). I hope you check them out and can find a little mental escape/respite in them when you need it.

1. Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

There’s a reason this book has become hugely popular and is being made into a movie by Reese Witherspoon’s production company. Sometimes books don’t live up to the hype surrounding them… THIS ONE DOES. Delia Owens’s writing is delectable—every sentence is masterful. I consider Where The Crawdads Sing to be a bucket list book for everyone; once you read it, you’ll understand why it’s a hit.

Quick summary: The #1 New York Times bestselling worldwide sensation with more than 12 million copies sold, hailed by The New York Times Book Review as “a painfully beautiful first novel that is at once a murder mystery, a coming-of-age narrative and a celebration of nature.”

2. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

I read Daisy Jones & the Six last year and enjoyed it so much that I’m always on the lookout for more of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s books. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo did not disappoint! It’s the perfect beach or poolside read.

Quick summary: An entrancing and wildly addictive journey of a reclusive Hollywood starlet as she reflects on her relentless rise to the top and the risks she took, the loves she lost, and the long-held secrets the public could never imagine.

3. The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley

If you like psychological thrillers and cliff hangers, or you’re looking for a book that will grab your attention and keep it, this book is definitely for you. Lucy Foley wrote the NYT bestseller The Guest List, another stellar mystery book, and I would say The Paris Apartment is even better.

Quick summary: From the author of The Guest List comes a new locked room mystery set in a Paris apartment building in which every resident has something to hide.

4. Brown Album: Essays on Exile and Identity by Porochista Khakpour

In my opinion, this essay collection by Porochista Khakpour is second to none. It’s raw, witty, heartbreaking, and heartwarming all at the same time. It’s a nonfiction read, and it’s beautifully written!

Quick summary: Brown Album is a stirring collection of essays, at times humorous and at times profound, drawn from more than a decade of Porochista's work and with new material included. Altogether, it reveals the tolls that immigrant life in this country can take on a person and the joys that life can give.

5. Cult Classic: A Novel by Sloane Crosley

Cult Classic was one of the most anticipated books of 2022, and I understand why. I truly laughed out loud a number of times while reading it, and the writing kept me hooked throughout the whole book. Sloane Crosley is witty and honest in her words, and the suspense and insight in Cult Classic are unmatched. Highly recommend this one!

Quick summary: Hilariously insightful and delightfully suspenseful, Cult Classic is an original: a masterfully crafted tale of love, memory, morality, and mind control, as well as a fresh foray into the philosophy of romance.
